Since the District of Columbia does not issue Marriage Licenses by mail, you apply in person to obtain a marriage license. If you would like to be married in Washington, DC but don’t want to apply for a marriage license yourselves, you have the option of obtaining a DC Marriage License by Proxy by having someone else go to the courthouse and apply for a marriage license on your behalf.
We are happy to offer this marriage application by proxy service in Washington DC for all engaged couples, whether you use our services to perform your ceremony or not. We’ve successfully helped over 1,000 couples get a marriage license in DC!
Our fee for this service is $260.00, which includes the $45.00 fee to the court for the marriage license and the court’s transaction fees. We make one weekly trip to the court on Thursday or Friday to submit applications and pick up licenses. A rush option is also available for an additional $150.00 if you need to get a marriage license in the shortest amount of time possible and can’t wait for our weekly court trip.
To complete the DC Marriage License Application by Proxy we need to have the following information for both applicants on the form:
- First, Middle, and Last Name
- Date of Birth
- Gender
- Home and Work Telephone Numbers
- Social Security Numbers (if US Citizens)
- Any Former Marriages and Status
- If Divorced, the City/State where the divorce decree was obtained
- Kinship Between Spouses (what, if any, is your blood relation to your co-applicant)
- Full Name and Title of your Officiant (they must be authorized and registered with the D.C. Court)
- Copies of government-issued photo ID to verify identity and proof of age (driver’s license or non-driver’s ID) *NOTE: You can use a copy of a passport if you are not a US citizen, but it must be notarized.
Our simple, secure online booking system makes submitting your information and IDs easy and convenient. Once we have all of the information from you, we can appear in person and submit your application by proxy. Once the license is obtained, you are free to get legally married at any time by an officiant or judge who is authorized and registered by the D.C. Marriage Bureau. The DC marriage license does not expire. All of our ceremony officiants are authorized and registered with the court, and you can read more about our offerings on the Marriage Services page.
In addition to the application by proxy service, we also offer an Expedited Certified Copies service to help couples request and receive official certified copies of their DC marriage license more quickly and securely.
If you need an authorized DC officiant to sign your license and don’t want to wait several weeks for an appointment for a courthouse wedding, consider our “Express Marriage” License Signing Service. We also offer several Elopement Packages and DC Marriage Officiant Services for full-scale weddings.
